From Elaina: Honestly, we can change the last word of this question to war, death, illness, breakups, any of the big challenges we face. COVID is slightly different in that we are all in this challenge together at the same time. But even through this time of anxiety and grieving, life is continuing. Along with the fear, illness, anxiety, and deaths, there are weddings and births and people coming together for the common good. Life is always going to bring joy, challenge, and sorrow. We cannot change that. The only thing we can control is how we react to what life brings.
So how do we stay upbeat and positive during the challenges of life? I think part of it is to see that big joys and big sorrows, and big fears are all transitional. It’s our reactions to the little things in life, not necessarily the big, that provide our general outlook. The good news is that we can change our reactions! We can decide who we want to be and how we want to feel. This is where faking it until you make it can be really useful. We might start out feeling scared, insecure, negative about a situation. We can decide what our optimal reaction would be to these times. Then, we simply restate our inner and outer dialogue until we actually start FEELING those thoughts.
An example of this is being jealous of someone. Instead of looking at what they have and thinking it’s unfair that they have it and you don’t, start being happy for them. Realize that just because they have it doesn’t mean that you can’t have it too. Just because they have money, a job, a significant other, doesn’t take it away from you. There’s enough joy to go around. Whenever you start feeling resentful, restate it in your head and out loud if necessary. Correct your internal monologue as often as needed. One day, after so many times of restating that you are happy for them and there is enough to go around, you’ll actually feel it!
Start thinking about the little things you can do, even in these hard times, to be more upbeat and positive!
Elaina’s Simple Joy of the Week: I don’t know about y’all, but sometimes it’s hard to get the recommended amount of fruits and veggies every day. I mean, would I rather have that piece of chocolate or a serving of broccoli? This greens powder is a quick fix for me. I’ve tried a lot of greens powders and they can taste pretty nasty. And most of them have wheat and barley grass which is a problem for me. This one is from my doctor’s office and is really tasty. It comes in espresso and chocolate flavor. I still try to eat more veggies, but it’s nice to know I’m covered!
